Group Classes in Germantown and at Southwest Tennessee Community College

There was great response to the classes held in Germantown in 2006.  Thanks to those who supported this offering.
 
I will be holding Fall 2007/Spring 2008 classes Germantown through the Germantown Parks and Recreation Department.  Classes will be held at Union University (formerly Emmanuel Baptist Church) at 2745 Hacks Cross Road.  For more information, call me at 901-877-7763 or click here to send me a message.
 
To register, visit Germantown Parks and Recreation located at 2276 West Street in Germantown.  Cost of each class is $70.  For New Players, there is a $10 book fee, payable in class.

Union University

Mountain Dulcimer Class Schedule

Fall 2007/Spring 2008

WHERE: Union University, 2745 Hacks Cross Road, Germantown

WHEN: Monday nights, 7:00-8:00 p.m.

COST: $70 per month

Classes are designed for beginner through intermediate level players. After attending the New Players class, the student, with practice, should be able to follow any of the other classes throughout the year.

Loaner dulcimers are available for all classes if you are interested in trying before you invest in an instrument.

Holiday Tunes

for the Mountain Dulcimer

Mondays, November 5, 12, 19 and 26

7 to 8 p.m.

Fee: $70

Players will learn four traditional tune arrangements. The class is for all level of players. Loaner dulcimers are available.   Christmas is Coming, Pat-a-Pan, Up on the Housetop, Little Drummer Boy.

 

Hymns for Mountain Dulcimer

Mondays, February 4, 11, 25

7:00-8:20 p.m.

Fee: $70

This class will focus on well-loved hymns that can be used for church performances or the player’s own enjoyment.

 

Introduction to Fingerpicking

Mondays, March 3, 10, 17

7:00-8:20 p.m.

This technique gives the dulcimer a much-loved tone and beauty. The class will show players how to incorporate this style of playing into their repertoire.

 

Songs in the Key of G

Mondays, April 14, 21, 28

7:00-8:20 p.m.

The ability to play in a variety of keys is important when playing with other musicians. This class will introduce using chords, a capo and re-tuning to change keys. All levels of players.

 

Using Chords and Basic Music Theory for Mountain Dulcimer

May 5, 12, 19

7:00-8:20 p.m.

Understanding simple principles of how music works as applied to the dulcimer can add depth to your playing.  

 

With only a few exceptions, all classes provide new music even where the names of the classes are similar to past classes. For example, the Christmas music class will present all new songs this year.

Class cannot be held on Mondays that Union University is closed.  In months in which the class is able to meet only three times, class will be extended by 20 minutes (from 7:00-8:20 p.m.) so that students receive a full 4 hours of instruction each month.
