The January Mountain Dulcimer Gathering will be held January 17, 2009 at
Whitestation Church of Christ, 1106 Colonial Road. The featured artist this year is Molly McCormack from Louisville,
KY.
Molly will lead three intermediate level workshops. The weekend will also include
Mountain Dulcimer for New Players led by Lee Cagle, and Hammered Dulcimer for New Players led by Betty Dawson.

Molly has enjoyed playing, performing and teaching on both the mountain
and hammer dulcimers since 1992. Molly's musical interests are varied. She often performs traditional tunes as well as many
contemporary tunes, both instrumental and vocal.
A natural teacher with a gentle teaching style, Molly has had the pleasure
of teaching at many week long dulcimer events. She is a regular teacher each year at Kentucky Music Week in Bardstown, KY.
She has had the honor of teaching at the Augusta Heritage Center Dulcimer Week in Elkins, WV and Appalachian State University
Dulcimer Week in Boone, NC, as well as many dulcimer weekend festivals around the country.
Molly entertains audiences with her instrumental and vocal arrangements. Besides
singing and playing the mountain and hammer dulcimers, she plays the guitar, penny whistle and autoharp.

Molly's Intermediate Level Workshops:
SESSION I: Repertoire Workshop - Molly will present a mixed
bag of tunes for building your repertoire, including a hymn, fiddle tune, and Celtic melody.
SESSION II: Singing with the Mountain Dulcimer - Molly has a beautiful
voice, but you do not have to be an advanced singer to enjoy singing with your instrument. This workshop covers
various techniques for singing with the instrument, some knowledge of chord progressions is helpful but not required.
Topics covered are grouping of chord positions, varying strumming and picking patterns, dynamics, and arrangement of tunes.
SESSION
III: Personalizing Tunes - Take a simple tune and work out a unique arrangement that suits your style of playing.
Techniques include playing various rhythms, changing keys, alternate chord progressions and more.
Mountain Dulcimer for New Players will be taught
by Lee Cagle. The three sessions will build on each other for a full day of workshops that will give you the basics
that you need to begin your musical journey with the mountain dulcimer. The class will focus on the basic techniques involved in playing, including
tuning, strumming patterns and reading tablature. No previous musical experience is necessary. Loaner
instruments are available.
Hammered Dulcimer for New Players will
be taught by Betty Dawson and will focus on a general orientation to this
fascinating instrument, and the basic techniques in, caring for the instrument, including tuning, hammering, and basic orientation
to the soundboard. No previous musical experience is necessary. Class members will learn how to read tabulature and will learn
several simple tunes while learning basic skills. Materials will be provided. Students may provide their own instrument, or
special arrangements can be made to rent an instrument. Instrument
